Girona is a city in the north-eastern province of Catalonia, next to the Onyar River. It is known for its medieval architecture, walled Old Quarter (Barri Vell) and the Força Vella fortress remaining from the Roman era. Landscaped gardens line the Arqueològic Passeig, a walkway that mirrors the medieval walls of the Old City, including watchtowers with sweeping vistas
One of the best-preserved in the country is the Jewish Quarter in Girona. Jews lived in Girona from 982 until 1492. The area they lived in, called El Call, is a labyrinth of narrow, twisting, cobblestoned lanes that are still intact and just like they were over 500 years ago. Such narrow streets are a joy to explore.
Girona is one of Spain's most diverse provinces. It has the Costa Brava's renowned coastal town, which offers both sandy beaches and secluded rocky coves. It has big, flat and fertile plains, ideal for rural tourism, with many campsites, cycling and walking routes
Barcelona and Girona are connected to the current AVE high-speed trains and the TGV trains that go on to Paris. You can buy your tickets at Estacio Sants Train and Bus Station in Barcelona. Girona has a stunning Jewish Historic Quarter that is easily visible on foot. There are several museums there, and all of the buildings are stone, squashed down narrow cobbled streets.
The city of Girona is not dependent on tourism and so, like other coastal cities, it is not empty in winter. In the winter, the climate is mild and so Girona is currently also a great destination.
The nightlife of Girona is highly influenced by the many students who call the townhome. Various bars, pubs and nightclubs can be found all over Girona, with the various establishments located in and around Plaça de la Independència being an especially popular meeting place to start the evening.
The small medieval town of Girona may not have neighboring Barcelona's popular buzzing nightlife, but it still has its fair share of great venues, from live music bars to late night clubs and Swish cocktail lounges. Here's our round-up of Girona's best nightlife to come. The weekend is, of course, the busiest nightlife season, but you can find vibrant clubs every day of the week.
